It’s no secret that everyone is looking for that magic pill to take their life to the next level. And marketers are taking full advantage. One of the latest trends is blue light blocking glasses. Let’s look to see if blue light blocking glasses are worth the money.

First, let’s start with some basics:

What is Blue Light?

Blue light is all around us. Blue light mid-range light on visible light spectrum. The sun actually gives off blue light. It’s natural and healthy to get blue light, but only during the day. Getting natural sunlight during the day is great to help circadian rhythm in the body, produce melanin, and overall general health. But the problem we run into is the use of blue lights in the evening time. As the sun goes down, we are supposed to have a reduction in blue light around us. When the moon comes up, we get tired, groggy, relaxed, and ready for bed. At least – that is what we are supposed to do.

With the introduction of LED TVs, iPhones, laptops, video games, iPads/tablets, and any other device, we are getting way more blue light in the evening and night times than ever before. Even fluorescent and LED lighting gives off blue light.

Why is Blue Light bad?

Blue light, because it is a shorter wavelength, which means higher energy, it can cause a number of health problems.

  • Blue Light can damage cells of the retina, contributing to premature aging of the eyes, impaired color discrimination and disturbance of night vision.
  • It can cause sleep disruption. Less melatonin is produced when the eye is exposed to too much blue light. This is fine, during the day when we are outside exposed to natural blue light. But in the evening, when we are supposed to be winding down – that is a different story. And sleep is one of the most important things you cand o for your health.
  • It also leads to eye strain, which can cause everything from headaches to mental fatigue.

The worst thing about blue light is the blue light at night. Your body is trying to shut down, and the blue light is giving your body mixed signals that it is not that time yet as it is receiving blue light.

Are Blue Light Blocking glasses worth the money?

Short answer: No.

That is not to say that there isn’t some benefit in wearing blue light blocking glasses. I own a pair myself. I went with a $20 pair on amazon. I typically use them in the evening time if I have some work to do (like tonight!).

But are they worth some of the outrageous prices out there? I have a hard time saying yes when there are natural options to fix blue light in your life.

Like, get off the computer. Stop watching TV late. Get off your iPhone in bed. Take breaks when you are on the computer.

Common sense things. Just because you ditch $200 for the latest pair of orange-tinted blockers doesn’t mean you get to stay up till 2a in a dark room playing Fortnite or go to bed with your nose in your phone.

At the end of the day – the world is looking for a cure to the crutch. We are getting headaches, strained eyes, and losing sleep because of the light in the various devices we have in our lives.

Do you wake up in the morning and walk outside to get that first burst of natural sunlight in your eyes? Do you spend your morning free of iPhone or other screens? If you spend 12+ hours in front of a computer screen, Do you take breaks? Do you get outside? Do you let your eyes reset every once in a while? Do you shut down screens as you wind down for bed? Do you sleep in a dark room? Are you getting 8 hours of sleep?

Or do you wake up and immediately reach for your iPhone to see how many likes you got from your post the night before? To get up and sit for 12hrs plus in front of your 27″ 4k screen, to come home and sit in front of your 75″ UHD television for hours while you scarf down whatever you took out of the microwave, to go to bed and finger f*ck your phone for 90 minutes before you toss and turn all night?

Yes, blue blockers have a great concept and are a great tool to SUPPLEMENT a strict regiment of early evening screen time. But to think they are going to be your savior in a world full of devilish quick fixes, you need to rethink your strategy.
